Since 1998, Ghana has committed itself to the Roll Back Malaria (RBM) Initiative of the World Health Organisation
(WHO), which builds on the Global Malaria Strategy with a focus on Africa and a goal to halve the world’s malaria
burden by 2010. Consequently, the country drew up a ‘Medium Term Strategic Plan for Malaria Control in Ghana’
(1998-2002), which sought to improve the coverage of malaria control activities by adopting an inter-sectoral
approach involving and promoting partnership with the private sector and the community. It has also committed
itself to the Abuja Declaration on Roll Back Malaria in Africa, which similarly seeks to achieve specific targets on
malaria prevention and control.
